JAMESTOWN – Winter weather is making its return to the area as lake effect snow and gusty winds are expected to kick up tonight and continue into the weekend.

The National Weather Service issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning from 10 p.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Saturday.

A long duration heavy lake effect snow expected with total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 feet with locally higher amounts possible in the most persistent bands. Additionally, snowfall rates may reach 1 to 2 inches per hour at times.

Winds could gust as high as 45 to 50 mph resulting in significant blowing and drifting snow.

Officials say travel will become be difficult to impossible with very poor visibility and deep snow cover on roads. The hazardous conditions will greatly impact the morning and evening commutes.

Gusty winds could also bring down tree branches, officials say.
