KENNEDY – A WNYNewsNow viewer had quite the view of a dust devil that occurred a little after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

The video sent in from Connie Whitton shows a distinct ground-based rotation near US-62 with a visible dust funnel extending into the sky.

WNYNewsNow’s First Defense Weather team quickly identified and affirmed the phenomena with the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

Dust devils are not a common sight in Western New York; found mainly in desert locations, they can occur anywhere if dry conditions are just right along with a light wind aloft and a cloudless sky.

They are mainly harmless and can generally have wind speeds of 50 MPH or less.
