ALBANY – New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has formed a group of scientists, doctors and health experts to develop a plan to distribute a COVID-19 vaccine, once one is approved by the federal government.

Cuomo, during a Thursday update in New York City, said the independent group will review every authorized vaccine and will advise state leaders on the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness in fighting the virus.

He says his goal is for New York to become the first COVID-free state.

“Frankly, I’m not going to trust the federal government’s opinion and I wouldn’t recommend to New Yorkers based on the federal government’s opinion,” said Cuomo. “New York’s response to COVID has been a model for this country, and we should also be the model vaccination program for the country.”

Cuomo reminded New Yorkers to stay vigilant as the positive coronavirus cases continue to rise around the United States and around the world.

For comparison, Cuomo shared some charts, which showed New York had cases decreasing, while other states had positive cases on the rise.

President Donald Trump says a COVID-19 vaccine could be ready as early as election day.
