JAMESTOWN – The first of four drive-through toy distributions took place over the weekend in Jamestown.

Toys for Tots Coordinator Terri Johnson says so far this holiday season her group has received thousands of toys with donations still coming in.

This year she says demand is high, with over 4,300 applications submitted from families around the county.

“We did three drive-though toy drop offs, and we had a couple of people come up and say that they were donating money because the program helped them when they were kids,” said Johnson. “We’ve been doing this for 19 years now, and some of those kids are now adults, and they are giving back to the community because they remember when they benefited from Toys for Tots in the past; it is great to see it come full circle.”

Because of COVID-19, the group is holding the drive-through distribution events to limit contact between families and volunteers.

Johnson says families who submitted an application will hear back from volunteers about when and where they can pick up the holiday gifts.
