MAYVILLE – Lawmakers have approved a reform plan from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office as part of an executive order from Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Sheriff Jim Quattrone spoke during the Chautauqua County Legislature Meeting Wednesday evening prior to the official vote.
Quattrone says that his office began working last May to listen to viewpoints on potential reform from community members and other stakeholders.
“Overall, I would like to say it’s a good process, something I thought we’ve been doing right along,” Quattrone said. “This just helped us to, perhaps, be more specific and intentional in getting input from community.” Quattrone furthers that other law enforcement agencies in the county have also worked right along to listen to the community.
“I would like to thank the Sheriff and his department for what appears to be a very comprehensive plan,” Niebel said. Niebel, however, says there “is no systemic racism” within the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.
Legislator Bill Ward adds that Quattrone’s work was imperative because he believes the work recognizes problems within law enforcement that may be occurring throughout the country rather than just the county.
The plan was approved a week prior to the Apr. 1 deadline.
