JAMESTOWN – A family-owned sports cards and memorabilia business cut the ribbon on their new storefront in downtown Jamestown Friday afternoon.

Ball Game Heroes, co-owned by Starr Ryder, his wife and two sons, was previously based at expo shows and online.

Ryder says during the pandemic, the demand for trading cards greatly increased, with not just guys his age, but with the younger generation too.

“Over the last year and a half during the pandemic, a lot of guys my age, with children his age (referring to his son), are sitting at home scouring eBay, looking for stuff to fill their time,” explained Ryder. “With that, the market has just taken off completely.”

That market is something the family is looking to take advantage of in Jamestown, selling a variety of trading cards and other sports memorabilia. There is also a range of sports related apparel as well, ranging from jerseys to hats.

“We’ve got a large selection of Bills hats, Steelers hats, Browns hats and various other teams in the store for people to come in and try them on,” said Ryder.

The store, located at 501 West 3rd Street, is open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and Saturday and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. There will be a grand opening celebration on July 3rd from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with a special surprise guest.

In the end, Ryder’s ambitions are fueled by his family, with both of his sons, including young Carter, already taking part.

“I have a couple of cards that my grandfather gave me, or my dad gave me, that I am never going to sell,” explained Carter Ryder.
