NEW YORK (WENY) – After a pandemic pause, the Columbus Day parade returns to New York City today.

The event is widely recognized in Manhattan as the largest celebration of Italian-American heritage in the country despite its controversy in recent years.

President Biden issued a proclamation for Columbus Day on Friday while also acknowledging Indigenous Peoples Day taking place today as well.

This was a shift from former President Trump who declined to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day.

New York City Public Schools will be closed today in recognition of both holidays.
