Legislation Directing Surplus Agricultural Products To Food Banks Signed Into Law

ALBANY – Legislation that directs surplus agricultural products to local food banks has been signed into law.

Just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed the Nourish New York program on Saturday.

The program, co-sponsored by State Senator George Borrello, is aimed at providing support to those facing food insecurity across the state.

The initiative reroutes New York’s surplus of agricultural products to the communities who need them most through the state’s food banks.

“The pandemic brought unprecedented hardship to so many New Yorkers and made the situation for those already struggling even worse,” Hochul said.

The program also provides support for food producers and farmers who have lost markets as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
