ALBANY N.Y. (WENY) – Governor Kathy Hochul has signed legislation expanding the discrimination protections of the Human Rights Law to include for-profit colleges and universities.

This will update the definition of a covered educational institution.

For decades, the Division of Human Rights has investigated discrimination complaints from students of both public and private institutions. However, this protection has not included students attending for-profit colleges and universities in the state, until now.

The legislation will ensure that New York State will grant all students legal protection against discrimination.
