MAYVILLE – Salaries will now be increased for various positions in the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.

The Chautauqua County Legislature approved a local law Wednesday evening amending the salaries for the Undersheriff, Captain, Warden and Corrections Lieutenant. According to the agenda, the salary range of each position would increase to allow for a monetary benefit for promotional opportunities.

Legislator Terry Niebel addressed his colleagues prior to the vote. He explains that he tasked the Sheriff’s and Human Services departments to research similar information in other counties throughout the state.

“They ended up looking at 32 other counties. The salary range before us now puts us somewhere in the middle of those 32 counties,” Niebel said. “We are looking at an increase of two or three ranges for each position. But given today’s situation with law enforcement, I believe these increases are warranted.”

The resolution was approved 18-0, with one Legislator absent.
