Police Secure Handgun At Jamestown Elementary School

JAMESTOWN – A student with a handgun prompted a major police response at a Jamestown area Elementary school on Monday.

The incident happened at Fletcher Elementary School around 3 p.m. after classes were dismissed for the day.


School officials say a 12-year old student from another school approached a staff member outside the entrance, seeking assistance and disclosed that she was in possession of a handgun.

The principal was immediately notified and called 911 and Fletcher staff placed all students within the building in a safe location.

An officer with Jamestown Police was able to safely secure the weapon from the student without incident.

Police say the youth was taken to UPMC Chautauqua for evaluation.

“We are thankful for the rapid and immediate response of our local law enforcement agency,” the district said in a statement. “Student safety remains our top priority and we will always keep our school community informed.”

Charges against the juvenile are pending further investigation, police continued.
