GENESEE, PA (WENY) – Five children were killed in a house fire in Potter County, Pennsylvania early Monday morning.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the fire happened on Slingerland Road in Genesee Township around 3:30 a.m.

Troopers say multiple fire departments were called out for a report of a house fire, and upon the arrival of firefighters, the home was engulfed in flames.

Five children were unable to escape the burning home. Troopers say an adult man and woman were able to get out, but were seriously injured when trying to rescue the children. Both adults were flown to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.

In a press release, Troopers say the investigation in ongoing, but preliminary information indicates “nothing suspicious involved with the fire and that the fire started in the basement.”

Troopers do not have an update on the medical condition of the two injured adults.

A GoFundMe has been started for the family: https://www.gofundme.com/f/please-help-charlie-and-michele-erway
