JAMESTOWN, NY (WNY News Now) – Construction plans for a new homeless shelter for women in Jamestown have been approved by local officials.
The City of Jamestown’s Planning Commission okayed the renovation of 303 Lafayette Street on Tuesday.
Chautauqua Opportunities first presented the project during a Jamestown City Council meeting earlier this year.
Funded via a $2.49 million grant from the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, once complete the shelter would be able to hold 18 women at any given time, with the goal of getting them back on their feet.
This is the second-ongoing homeless shelter project specifically for women in Chautauqua County. UCAN City Mission is also building a shelter on Main Street.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, officials say the number of local homeless have skyrocketed.
