SHIRLEY, N.Y. (WENY) – Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), and nominee for Governor, issued a statement after a shooting took place on the property of his home in Shirley, New York.
He says two individuals were shot outside his home and were laying down under his front porch behind bushes in front of the porch.
The shooting took place Sunday afternoon around 2:18 pm.
Both of his daughters were home at the time while he and his wife just departed the Bronx Columbus Day Parade and were in the car.
“My 16-year-old daughters, Mikayla and Arianna, were at our house doing homework, while my wife, Diana, and I were in the car, having just departed the Bronx Columbus Day Parade in Morris Park,” Zeldin said.
He also said in a tweet, his daughters were at the kitchen table doing homework. One of the bullets landed just 30 ft away. His daughters were not hurt.
“After my daughters heard the gunshots and the screaming, they ran upstairs, locked themselves in the bathroom, and immediately called 911. They acted very swiftly and smartly every step of the way and Diana and I are extremely proud of them,” Zeldin said.
Zeldin says he does not know the identities of the individuals but they have both been transported to area hospitals.
This incident is currently under investigation.
This is Zeldin’s second scare, back in July during a campaign event while delivering a speech in Fairpoint NY, a man jumped on stage and attempted to attack him.
That man has been charged with attempted assault in the second degree.
