ALBANY, NY (WENY) – On New York State’s mid-term election ballot there are four state-wide races. And at the top of the ballot is the race for governor.

The gubernatorial candidates are current Gov. Kathy Hochul and her opponent Lee Zeldin. Hochul became governor last year after Andrew Cuomo resigned in August. Previously she served as New York State’s Lieutenant Governor since 2015.

Since then, she has pushed for a number of issues including public safety and gun violence, reproductive rights, climate change, and economy and jobs.

“It’s been a tough time, I understand that. I’ve been out there, I felt the pain, seeing people struggle. But also, your concern about your safety. Your concern about your kids and your grand kids. I’m a new grandmother, I know what it’s like,” Hochul said.

Governor candidate Lee Zeldin, started his political career in the New York State Senate in 2010, and was elected to congress in 2014. Zeldin has also served on active duty as a military intelligence officer, prosecutor and military magistrate. Some of the issues he has pushed for in his candidacy include cutting taxes, crime and gun laws, and abortion.

“What we’re here talking about in the need to fight crime shouldn’t even be viewed as a Democrat versus Republican issue. We all want to be safe on our streets,” said Zeldin.

Also on the ballot are the races for lieutenant governor, attorney general, and comptroller. The candidates for lieutenant governor are Antonio Delgado and Alison Esposito. Delgado is the current lieutenant governor. He previously served as a U.S. Representative for New York’s 19th district and was the first person of color to represent upstate New York in congress.

Esposito, prior to becoming a candidate for lieutenant governor, served in the New York City Police Department as a Deputy Inspector. In her candidacy she has spoken out about being the first openly gay candidate for the New York State republican party lieutenant governor.

The comptroller candidates are Thomas P. DiNapoli and Paul Rodriguez. DiNapoli has served as comptroller since 2007. Rodriguez is an investor and this will be his first time running for public office.

The attorney general candidates are Letitia James and Michael Henry. James is the current attorney general of New York State and Henry works as a lawyer in New York City.

Polls are open Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you are unsure of where to vote visit your local board of elections.
