JAMESTOWN, NY (WNY News Now) – A malfunctioning appliance caused significant damage to an office within the Jamestown Police Department.

Jamestown Mayor Eddie Sundquist provided an update on the fire during Monday’s city council meeting.

Flames broke out last Friday, with the Jamestown Fire Department quickly responding thanks in part to their close proximity with Station 1 just around the corner on Spring Street.

The room was being used by investigators and prosecutors with the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office.

“It did demolish that office pretty bad,” explained Sundquist. “So, we are in the process of cleaning that up and trying to restore that, we’re working with our insurance department and going through that process now. But, it’s gonna take a little time.”

This is not the first trouble reported at the Jamestown Police headquarters on East Second Street below city hall. In years past the agency’s lobby was closed due to flooding. The barracks also once had to be evacuated due to a gas leak within the building.
