JAMESTOWN, NY (WNY News Now) – In an attempt to raise diversity, the maximum age allowed to apply to become a State Trooper has increased from 29 to 34-years-old.

Governor Kathy Hochul allowed New York State Police’s request to change trooper applications to give people more time to choose to apply.

New York State Police Superintendent Steven Nigrelli says that this update will allow for a more diverse and skilled group of applicants.

“There are many qualified candidates from the military or other careers who decide that they want to transition to the State Police, but because of the previous age requirement, some were not eligible, “ said Superintendent Nigrelly.

This change to promote a more well-rounded police force is in addition to other recruitment updating efforts such as, underrepresented within law enforcement, and committing to the 30X30 pledge to increase the percentage of female recruits to 30 percent by 2030.
