(WNY News Now) – A 17-year-old male was sentenced to 1 1/3 to 4 years of incarceration for causing a fatal crash that took the lives of four passengers in a stolen vehicle.
Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn revealed that a 17-year-old male from Buffalo has been handed a sentence of 1 1/3 to 4 years of incarceration after being adjudicated as a youthful offender by Erie County Court Judge Susan Eagan. The young offender, who was 16 at the time of the incident, was responsible for a tragic crash that occurred on Monday, October 24, 2022, around 6:45 a.m.
Operating a Kia Sportage, which had been reported stolen earlier that morning, the teenager was driving on the inbound Kensington Expressway when he caused a collision near the entrance to the westbound Scajaquada Expressway. The impact led to the ejection of all five passengers from the vehicle. Tragically, four of them lost their lives as a result.
Among the deceased were three teenagers – a 17-year-old male, a 16-year-old male, and a 14-year-old female – who were pronounced dead at the crash site. An additional 19-year-old male passenger succumbed to injuries at ECMC. The lone survivor, a 14-year-old female, endured severe injuries and required treatment at ECMC before being released from the hospital.
The young offender admitted guilt on June 15, 2023, pleading guilty to four counts of Manslaughter in the Second Degree (Class “C” felonies), one count of Assault in the First Degree (Class “B” violent felony), and one count of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree (Class “D” felony). The guilty pleas were in relation to the most serious charges in the indictment for each victim.
The young offender was sentenced to 1 1/3 to 4 years of incarceration.
