(WNY News Now) – Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center has launched a scholarship program aimed at increasing the number of certified Tobacco Treatment Specialists to help at-risk communities overcome tobacco addiction.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center has committed $500,000 to fund a training initiative addressing the disproportionately high rates of tobacco-related health issues within specific communities. The program will offer scholarships to New York State residents, covering full tuition for the Roswell Park Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) Training Program. This five-year effort aims to certify up to 100 Tobacco Treatment Specialists annually.
The initiative responds to the urgent need for effective tobacco and nicotine addiction treatment programs in communities facing higher tobacco-related disparities. Dr. Christine Sheffer, Director of the TTS Training Program at Roswell Park, emphasized that communities such as sexual- and gender-minority groups, low-income populations, and communities of color have higher tobacco usage rates and are more vulnerable to tobacco-related diseases.
The program welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds, including health professionals and community members, who are committed to addressing tobacco use within their communities. Led by renowned experts, the training encompasses core competencies, evolving tobacco regulations, and various tobacco product discussions.
Registration is now open for the upcoming TTS Training Programs scheduled for September 2023 and April 2024. Interested individuals can apply for scholarships and register online.
