(WNY News Now) – Albany, N.Y. – In a bid to fortify New York’s volunteer fire service, the FY 2023-24 State Budget secures $25 million in capital funding, alongside an additional $10 million to aid volunteer firefighters in meeting mandatory training course costs.
New York State has earmarked $25 million in capital funding from the FY 2023-24 State Budget to enhance its volunteer fire service. Complementing this initiative is an extra $10 million designated to alleviate the financial burden of training courses imposed on volunteer firefighters.
Administered by the State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the grant program aims to reinforce volunteer fire departments by upgrading facilities and enhancing response capabilities. Applications for grants supporting construction, renovation, or purchase of facilities and equipment for service projects must be submitted by April 30, 2024, at 5:00 p.m.
The program focuses on ensuring the safety and structural integrity of fire stations and training facilities, compliance with current building codes, and promoting effective firefighting practices. It also supports volunteer firefighter safety, health, and wellness through the provision of personal protective equipment, decontamination supplies, and exhaust removal systems.
Governor Hochul expressed appreciation for New York’s volunteer firefighters, emphasizing that the funding signifies unwavering support for those who risk their lives for community safety.
“The volunteer firefighters of New York are selfless public servants who put their lives on the line to keep their communities safe,” Governor Hochul said. “This funding will go a long way in reminding those who continue to serve that we will always support them in any and every way we can.”
The grant program offers two funding options: $20 million for construction, renovation, or facility purchase projects, including fire stations and training towers, and $5 million for allowable fire service equipment projects, such as personal protective equipment, radios, and rehabilitation equipment. This initiative aligns with efforts to consolidate fire service resources through regionalization, expanding response capabilities beyond jurisdictional boundaries.
The funding aims to strengthen and stabilize New York’s volunteer fire service, ensuring that firefighters have the necessary resources to continue their vital public service.
