(WNY News Now) – New York – New York State has allocated $1.8 million in grants to 27 not-for-profit organizations dedicated to preserving state parks, trails, historic sites, and public lands. These funds support public-private partnerships, enhancing state park amenities, maintaining and beautifying parks, and organizing educational programs and special events, with a focus on the upcoming 2024 New York State Park Centennial Celebration.
Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of Friends Groups in the success of State Parks, acknowledging their vital role in leveraging these grants for park improvement. The grants, part of the Park and Trail Partnership Grant program funded through the state Environmental Protection Fund, will be matched by over $350,000 in private funds.
Recipients include Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House, receiving $106,000 to hire a Curatorial Associate, and Friends of Knox Farm State Park, awarded $35,000 for a family-centered solar eclipse viewing event. Other beneficiaries range from the Aquarium of Niagara to the Boutwell Hill Ski Club, which secured $239,564 for sustainable trail rehabilitation.
Since 2015, the Park and Trail Partnership Grant program has disbursed over $8 million, matched by $2.7 million in private funds, supporting non-profit organizations and volunteer-led projects across New York State. Parks & Trails New York, the leading advocate for the state’s parks and trails, has been instrumental in these efforts.
