(WNY News Now) – The National Weather Service (NWS) Buffalo NY has issued a Lakeshore Flood Warning effective from 7 AM Saturday to 4 AM EST Sunday for Erie and Chautauqua counties, anticipating significant lakeshore flooding and rapid rises, particularly along Lake Erie’s eastern end.

The warning underscores the potential for lakeshore flooding in areas like Hamburg, Buffalo Harbor, Canalside, and Dunkirk Harbor, as well as other flood-prone zones. The elevated water levels, expected to peak Saturday afternoon, pose a risk of flooding along Route 5 and could lead to substantial shoreline erosion due to very high wave action. Residents are advised to avoid breakwaters, piers, and beaches for safety, considering the likelihood of larger-than-appearing waves.
