(WNY News Now) New York – New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today joins the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators in urging New Yorkers to search for lost or forgotten funds on National Unclaimed Property Day.

“Unclaimed Property Day is a great reminder to check for your lost money,” said DiNapoli. “It’s quick and easy to search for unclaimed funds on our website, and you can also check for relatives, businesses, organizations, nonprofits, municipalities, or religious institutions. Anyone could have unclaimed funds, and we want to make sure lost money is returned to its rightful owners.”

The State Comptroller’s office returned over $406 million in 2023 to New Yorkers and continues to return about $1.5 million in lost money every business day. The office currently oversees 49 million accounts, totaling $18.4 billion in unclaimed funds. Some accounts date back to the 1940s.

Funds can come from a forgotten bank account, stocks, insurance money, an uncashed check, or a security or utility deposit that goes unreturned. Most claims are worth less than $100.

New Yorkers can check for unclaimed funds on the State Comptroller’s website at osc.ny.gov or call 1-800-221-9311, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The State Comptroller’s office will also have staff members at community events in February.
