(WNY News Now) – New York – The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) launches its School Seedling Program, offering schools and youth organizations across the state an opportunity to receive 25-50 free tree or shrub seedlings, promoting hands-on learning and environmental conservation.
Since 1985, DEC’s School Seedling Program has been a cornerstone of environmental education, distributing nearly 1 million seedlings to schools and youth organizations throughout New York State. The program aims to engage students in hands-on learning about the vital role trees play in ecosystems while fostering a sense of conservation responsibility.
Educators can apply online by March 29th to receive free seedlings from the Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery. The seedlings, 2 to 3 years old and 4″-12″ tall, will be shipped by FedEx on specified dates in late April and early May.
Participating schools and youth organizations will not only receive free trees or shrubs but also guidance on planting and care. The program aligns with Next Generation Science Standards, providing a practical approach for students to understand natural systems, observe their environment, and expand their conservation vocabulary.
Eligible organizations include all schools within New York State, youth education-based organizations, and homeschool groups. Each organization can submit one application, emphasizing a limit to ensure widespread participation.
The selection of seedlings includes 50 jack pine, 25 red oak, and 30 mixed shrub seedlings. These species have been carefully chosen to thrive in various environments, providing an opportunity for planting in diverse locations.
Applicants are encouraged to contact their Regional DEC Forestry Office for guidance on suitable species and planting techniques. The School Seedling Program supports a broad range of scholastic programs, emphasizing planting on-site to involve students in the care and protection of the seedlings.
