PennDOT and PA Turnpike Announce Upgrades to 511PA Traveler Information Service

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) today unveiled major enhancements to 511PA, Pennsylvania’s free statewide travel information service. The upgraded 511PA now offers a redesigned website, improved mobile app, and a more streamlined phone system. This initiative follows Governor Shapiro’s recent launch of a revamped PA.gov, aimed at delivering user-centric digital experiences.

“Each year, nearly 100 billion vehicle miles are traveled on Pennsylvania’s roads and bridges,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “The Shapiro Administration is dedicated to making Commonwealth services more accessible and user-friendly. These enhancements to 511PA provide essential information to the traveling public, improving safety and reducing congestion.”

Launched in 2009, 511PA provides real-time traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, and access to over 1,000 traffic cameras. The service, available 24/7, is accessible via smartphone apps for iPhone and Android, by calling 5-1-1, or through regional alerts on X. The new “Driving Mode” feature allows motorists to receive hands-free alerts.

“We prioritize the safety of the 550,000 daily PA Turnpike customers and understand that road incidents can happen anytime,” said PA Turnpike Chief Operating Officer Craig Shuey. “These 511PA updates will greatly enhance the user experience, providing drivers with real-time information to make informed travel decisions.”

Key Updates to 511PA

  • Mobile App Enhancements: The redesigned app now allows users to limit alerts to specific routes, use a “My Cameras” feature, and view alternate routes.
  • Website Redesign: The new user-friendly website offers personalization and customization options for easier access to vital information.
  • Improved Phone System: The updated phone system provides a streamlined menu for faster information retrieval.
  • Personalized Travel Alerts: Users can sign up for custom travel alerts. Current subscribers must create a new account and set their preferences in the updated system.
