(WNY News Now) – New York – Governor Kathy Hochul condemns the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling to allow bump stocks, citing concerns over public safety and the impact on gun violence prevention efforts.
Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court made a pivotal decision regarding bump stocks, devices that enable semi-automatic firearms to fire more rapidly. The ruling has ignited a fierce debate across the nation, particularly among lawmakers and advocates for stricter gun control measures.
In a statement following the decision, New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed deep disappointment and emphasized the potential consequences for public safety. Hochul invoked the tragic Buffalo massacre, where a gunman used a bump stock to intensify the lethality of his weapon, resulting in the loss of ten lives. The Governor lamented the ruling as a setback for efforts to curb gun violence and protect communities.
“Exactly one month ago, we marked the anniversary of the deadly Buffalo massacre — the horrific day when a hate-fueled gunman murdered ten of our neighbors, using a bump stock to transform his firearm into an even deadlier weapon,” Governor Hochul stated. “Today’s Supreme Court decision on bump stocks is a sad day for the families who have lost loved ones in mass shootings and for people across America.”
Governor Hochul reaffirmed New York State’s commitment to stringent gun control measures, highlighting initiatives such as expanded Red Flag Laws and restrictions on firearm purchases by teenagers. She underscored her administration’s resolve to enforce New York’s existing ban on bump stocks, enacted in 2020, despite the federal ruling.
“In New York, we’re doing everything we can to end the scourge of gun violence. We’ve expanded our Red Flag Laws and banned teens from purchasing AR-15 rifles, and will continue to enforce the 2020 law banning bump stocks in New York,” Governor Hochul asserted. “Public safety is my top priority — and I’m committed to doing everything in my power to keep New Yorkers safe.”
The Supreme Court’s decision has sparked outrage among gun control advocates, who argue that allowing bump stocks undermines efforts to prevent mass shootings and protect communities from gun violence. Conversely, proponents of Second Amendment rights view the ruling as a victory for firearm enthusiasts’ freedoms.
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this landmark decision, the debate over gun control and its implications for public safety is expected to intensify in the coming months. Governor Hochul’s stance reflects a broader sentiment among many state leaders who advocate for stricter regulations in the face of escalating gun violence incidents.
