(WNY News Now) – New York – New York state’s local sales tax collections rose by 3.9% in May compared to the same month in 2023, totaling $1.78 billion. This increase marks a $66.4 million rise, according to State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

“Local sales tax growth improved in May after four straight months of either flat or modest increases,” DiNapoli stated. “New York City collections continued to be the main driver of growth, although most counties also experienced year-over-year increases for the month.”

Key Highlights

  • New York City: Collections reached $783 million, up 5.3% or $39.5 million from May 2023.
  • Rest of the State: County and city collections amounted to $884 million, a 2.6% increase.
  • Widespread Growth: Over 80% (46 of 57) of counties saw year-over-year increases.

These figures reflect cash distributions made to counties and tax-imposing cities by the state Department of Taxation and Finance, based on estimated dues. In the third month of each calendar quarter, these distributions are adjusted to align with vendor-reported sales, with the next quarterly figures (April to June) set to be released in July.
