Potentially damaging thunderstorms are sweeping through Western New York, bringing high winds and hail.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo, NY, has issued a severe thunderstorm warning effective from 8:01 PM EDT until 8:15 PM EDT on June 18. At 8:00 PM, a severe thunderstorm was detected near Franklinville, approximately 20 miles northeast of Salamanca, moving northeast at a speed of 20 mph.

The primary hazards associated with this storm include wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph and hail measuring up to the size of quarters. Radar indicated these severe conditions, which pose significant risks, including potential damage to vehicles from hail and wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Areas likely to be affected include Arcade, Franklinville, Chaffee, Yorkshire, Sardinia, Delevan, Farmersville Station, West Valley, Lime Lake-Machias, and Sandusky. Residents in these areas are advised to seek shelter immediately.

To ensure your safety, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows and cover your head to protect yourself from potential flying debris.
