(WNY News Now) – Olean, NY – On June 19, 2024, the Olean Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) issued an urgent notification following the discharge of untreated water into Olean Creek. This incident, occurring at 135 Adams St., Olean, NY, resulted from an intense rainstorm that overwhelmed the system.

Excessive Rainfall Overwhelms Infrastructure

The severe weather event saw over four inches of rain in a short period, pushing the plant’s capabilities to their limits. Despite all equipment functioning as intended, the excessive rainfall led to a necessary release of approximately 50,000 gallons of untreated water over a 148-minute period, starting at 10:45 PM.

Impact on Public and Environment

Local authorities have been monitoring the situation closely to ensure all equipment is operating correctly and to assess the ongoing effects on the creek and surrounding areas.
