(WNY News Now) – Brooklyn, NY – In a harrowing night of violence, two men lost their lives and another remains critically injured following two related shootings in Brooklyn. The incidents occurred within a span of seven minutes and just two blocks apart, according to police reports.

At 10:51 p.m. on Sunday, gunfire erupted outside a migrant shelter located on Ryerson St. near Park Ave. Responding officers discovered 21-year-old Enny DeJesus Urbina Mendez and 59-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. Urbina Mendez, who resided at the shelter, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The older victim, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head, remains in critical condition. Authorities recovered 10 shell casings from the scene.

The shelter, serving single women, couples, and single men, has been the subject of 73 Department of Buildings complaints, including issues of noise and illegal parking. The latest complaint was filed on July 7, citing loud conversations outside the facility.

Just seven minutes prior to this shooting, a 30-year-old man, Arturo Jose Rodriguez-Marcano, was shot in the chest at Steuben Playground near Flushing Ave. and Steuben St. Medics transported him to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Brooklyn Methodist, where he succumbed to his injuries. Rodriguez-Marcano was identified as homeless by the police. Two shell casings were recovered at the scene.

The suspected gunman fled both scenes on a dark-colored moped, last seen heading north on Ryerson Street. Surveillance images of the suspect have been released, and police urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
