(WNY News Now) -New York City – Attorney General James Announces Arrests of 13 Individuals and Seizure of 74 Firearms.

 Attorney General Letitia James announced the takedown of a major gun and drug trafficking ring operating across multiple states, culminating in the arrest of 13 individuals and the seizure of 74 firearms, including assault weapons and ghost guns. The network, which also trafficked cocaine, was dismantled after a ten-month investigation by the Organized Crime Task Force (OCTF) and federal agencies.

Attorney General James highlighted the severity of the threat posed by assault weapons and ghost guns, stating, “Assault weapons and ghost guns pose some of the greatest threats to our communities, and we will do everything possible to keep them out of New York.”

Investigation Details The investigation began in August 2023 and focused on Anthony Ortiz Vasquez, who was found to be selling illegal firearms and cocaine. Key evidence was gathered through wiretaps, video surveillance, and analysis of electronic communications. Ortiz Vasquez’s network extended to New Jersey and Florida, with accomplices transporting and selling firearms and drugs in New York City.

  • Yadira Vasquez
  • Kiara Rodriguez

Seized during the operation were 74 firearms, including nine assault-style rifles, eight assault-style pistols, and four ghost guns, along with over 2,100 rounds of ammunition and 500 grams of cocaine.

Charges and Sentencing The defendants face a range of charges, including Criminal Sale of a Firearm in the First Degree, Conspiracy in the Fourth Degree, and Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the First Degree. These charges carry significant prison sentences, reflecting the seriousness of their crimes.

Interagency Cooperation The success of the operation was due to the collaboration between the OCTF, DEA, HSI, NYPD, and other local and federal agencies. This coordinated effort highlights the importance of interagency cooperation in tackling illegal gun and drug trafficking.
