(WNY News Now) – Syracuse – A swift investigation into the tragic stabbing of Jermil Washington has led to the identification and arrest of a suspect, marking a significant development in Syracuse’s latest homicide case.

On August 23, 2024, around 4:36 p.m., Syracuse Police responded to a stabbing complaint after being flagged down by a concerned citizen in the 100 block of Temple Street. Officers quickly located the victim, 49-year-old Jermil Washington, suffering from a severe stab wound. The incident was traced back to the 900 block of South Clinton Street. Despite the life-saving efforts provided first by officers and later by Upstate Hospital’s medical team, Washington succumbed to his injuries.

The Syracuse Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) Homicide Unit immediately launched an in-depth investigation. Detectives interviewed numerous individuals, conducted a thorough canvass of the neighborhood and surrounding areas, and meticulously analyzed the evidence collected.

These efforts culminated in identifying the suspect as 28-year-old Shandrika Kersey, who was located on August 26, 2024. Kersey was taken into custody and transported to the Public Safety Building before being lodged at the Onondaga County Justice Center. She now faces charges of Manslaughter in the First Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree.
