(WNY News Now) – Buffalo — Hector Anaya, a 51-year-old Buffalo resident, has pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, a charge that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and could lead to a maximum of 40 years behind bars, along with a fine of up to $5 million. U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced the plea, which was accepted by U.S. District Judge John L. Sinatra, Jr.
The case against Anaya began in April 2024 when Buffalo Police detectives, acting on a tip, conducted surveillance on his residence. During this time, detectives observed Anaya engaging in multiple hand-to-hand transactions, which were later identified as controlled purchases of suspected heroin and cocaine. On April 25, 2024, a search warrant executed at Anaya’s home resulted in the seizure of a firearm, ammunition, and a significant quantity of fentanyl.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Buffalo Police Department. ATF Special Agent-in-Charge Bryan Miller and Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia led the operations that ultimately led to Anaya’s arrest and subsequent guilty plea.
Sentencing for Anaya is scheduled for January 3, 2025.
