(WNY News Now) – Wheatfield – A structure fire on River Road in Wheatfield left one firefighter injured during an emergency response early Sunday morning.
In the early hours of September 22, 2024, a structure fire broke out at 2164 River Road, prompting a rapid response from local emergency services. The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call at approximately 1:29 a.m., reporting heavy black smoke pouring from a detached garage at the residence.
Upon arriving at the scene, deputies quickly evacuated nearby residents to ensure their safety. Frontier Volunteer Fire Company firefighters began battling the flames as smoke continued to billow from the building.
Tragedy struck during the firefighting efforts when a 41-year-old volunteer firefighter suffered what authorities suspect was a medical emergency. The firefighter collapsed after falling down a flight of stairs and was promptly transported to Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) by Tri-Community Ambulance. Fortunately, the firefighter’s injuries are considered non-life-threatening.
At this time, there is no property damage estimate available, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Niagara County Fire Investigation Unit. Further updates will be released as they become available.
