(WNY News Now) – A swift response from the Jamestown Fire Department saved a local residence and four cats after a kitchen fire broke out early Saturday morning at 33 Sturges Street.

The Jamestown Fire Department responded to an emergency structure fire at 33 Sturges Street, owned by WNY B.E.M Services, in the early hours of October 5, 2024. The alarm was raised at 1:22 a.m., prompting a coordinated effort by the fire department and supporting agencies. Smoke was already visible from the street when crews arrived, with two individuals standing outside the residence.

Upon arrival, Engine 4 pulled a hose line to the rear of the structure while Engine 3 connected to a nearby hydrant. Firefighters forced entry into the home, where visible flames were emanating from a first-floor window. Crews successfully knocked down the fire, containing it to the kitchen area.

Ladder 1 and Engine 3 crews conducted a thorough search of the structure while ventilating smoke from the building. Four cats were rescued from the residence and returned to their owners, highlighting the department’s careful approach.

Nine firefighters, led by Battalion Chief Ryan Roush, managed the operation with assistance from off-shift personnel, including six additional firefighters and two fire investigators. The Jamestown Police Department, BPU, ALSTAR EMS, and the Red Cross also assisted on the scene. Working smoke detectors in the home contributed to the early detection of the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
