(WNY News Now) – In a concentrated effort to reduce gun violence, the Buffalo Police Department announced 19 arrests and the recovery of 11 firearms in a single week.
Buffalo, N.Y. – The Buffalo Police Department has reported a surge in arrests tied to firearm possession and related offenses, with 19 suspects apprehended and 11 firearms seized between October 21 and October 27. The arrests involved charges ranging from illegal gun possession to assault, highlighting an ongoing campaign to tackle gun violence and ensure public safety in Buffalo.
On October 21, two Buffalo men, Adrian Jones and Chaka Chapman, were arrested separately on Woltz Avenue and Berkshire Avenue. Both arrests led to the recovery of loaded firearms, including a Sar9 Gen 3 and a Stoeger STR9, the latter reported stolen in Atlanta, Georgia. Following the District Attorney’s recommendation, Chapman was remanded, while Jones was released under judicial discretion.
The next day, Alfonza Mozell, a Florida resident, was arrested at the Peace Bridge with three firearms. Although Mozell had a valid Florida permit, he was issued an appearance ticket for possessing weapons in New York, where his permit is invalid. On the same day, Paul Hall, a Hamburg resident with three prior felony convictions, was arrested at East Ferry Street and Humboldt Parkway with a .38 revolver and subsequently remanded.
A notable incident on Schutrum Street involved nine arrests following a reported robbery and gang assault. Officers recovered a loaded Glock handgun from the scene, leading to remand orders or bail impositions for most of the suspects, aged 19 to 20.
Further arrests followed throughout the week. On October 23, multiple suspects, including Malik and Nigel Scales, were apprehended after a shots-fired call on Alma Avenue, resulting in the recovery of a loaded Sig Sauer P365. Malik Scales, with prior felony convictions, was remanded alongside his brother, Nigel. Another high-profile arrest included Daryle Tyson, who faces multiple charges, including unlawful imprisonment and assault, following an alleged domestic dispute and weapons charge.
The following days continued with firearm recoveries and arrests. On October 25, Alicen Licht was detained on 7th Street with a loaded 9mm Smith & Wesson, while 18-year-old Nima Ganjavi from Virginia was arrested on October 26 at the Peace Bridge carrying a legally owned Palmetto Dagger. Although Ganjavi’s firearm ownership was legitimate in his state, he faced charges for possession without a New York permit.
The department encourages residents to report any suspicious activity and remains committed to transparency and public engagement in its fight against gun violence. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
