(WNY News Now) – New York Attorney General Letitia James condemns the U.S. Department of Justice’s recent immigration enforcement memo, reaffirming the state’s commitment to protecting immigrant rights.

New York Attorney General Letitia James strongly rebuked the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) memorandum that urges state and local law enforcement agencies to assist in federal immigration enforcement efforts.

James criticized the memo as an attempt by the federal government to pressure state and local authorities into supporting mass deportations. “This is an attempt by the President to force state and local governments to carry out his mass deportations,” said Attorney General James. “New York will not be bullied into breaking the law to fulfill a campaign promise. We will not sit idly by and allow the Constitution to be undermined.”

“In New York state, we have laws that protect immigrants and limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement efforts. Those laws should continue to be followed by all New York law enforcement and officials.

“As Attorney General, I will always uphold our laws and protect the rights of all New Yorkers, including the rights of immigrants.”

In addition to her public statement, Attorney General James has provided updated guidance for local law enforcement agencies, which is now available on the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) website. The guidance aims to clarify the legal framework surrounding cooperation with federal immigration efforts.
