(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a Flood Watch effective from Tuesday afternoon, March 4, through Thursday afternoon, March 6, due to rapid snowmelt and anticipated rainfall.

Flooding Risk from Snowmelt and Rain

The watch covers portions of central and western New York, including the counties of Jefferson, Lewis, Northern Cayuga, Oswego, Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Northern Erie, Ontario, Orleans, Southern Erie, Wayne, and Wyoming.

An intense storm system will bring unseasonably warm temperatures, rising into the 50s on Tuesday and Wednesday. The warm-up, combined with a half-inch of rainfall, will lead to rapid snowmelt, increasing the risk of flooding.

Potential Impacts

  • Excessive runoff could result in flooding of rivers, creeks, and low-lying areas.
  • Streams and tributaries may overflow, especially in areas prone to ice jams.
  • Flood-prone locations should be monitored for rising water levels.

Preparedness and Safety

Residents in flood-prone areas should stay alert for possible Flood Warnings and be prepared to take action if necessary. Monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local authorities.
