Feeling restless, unhappy, or just generally out of sorts? Try spending some time outdoors. Previous studies have shown that engaging with nature can improve mood and wellbeing, and you don’t even need to spend hours and hours outside to feel better. In fact, recent research shows that Americans only need an average of 67 minutes outside everyday to feel their best.
So where do you go to get your daily dose of sunshine and happiness? Head to any of the best outdoor spots in Western New York and cycle, go on a hike, have a picnic, or just bask in the beauty of nature. To enjoy life’s simple pleasures, try these outdoor activities at these WNY destinations
Vineyard Walks and Picnics
Most people think that one can only truly enjoy the outdoors by engaging in adrenaline-pumping activities like ziplining, mountain climbing, or white river rafting. However, if you’re more of a casual-stroll-and-stop-for-snacks kind of person, consider going on a vineyard walk and a picnic. WNY is home to some of the best wineries in the East Coast, and some of these places offer tours of the grounds. You can also sample wines ranging from reds like Cabernet Sauvignon, which has historic ties to Sonoma County, to refreshing whites like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
For a chill outdoor experience, head to the Lake Erie Wine Country and visit any of the wineries in the area, such as the Johnson Estate. They offer guided vineyard walks, and they even have two RV camping sites so you can stay for a night or two. The estate has an outdoor tasting area overlooking their vineyards, and here you can sit and relax while enjoying some wine paired with cheese and charcuterie boards. Another winery that’s worth checking out is the Woodbury Winery and Vineyards. Apart from vineyard tours, this establishment also has a happy hour where you can play games like cornhole and table tennis while sipping your favorite wine.
Day Hikes
Thinking of going on a day hike with your buddies? WNY has plenty of hiking trails that cater to novice and expert hikers, so if you’ve never hiked before, plan on going for a relaxing walk at Bond Lake Park. This destination has a few easy trails that go through the woods, and five lakes where you can go wading and fishing. There are also shelters and picnic tables around the main lake so you can sit and relax, or enjoy a quiet picnic lunch with your family and friends.
For a prime hiking spot with gorgeous nature views, head to the Niagara Falls Gorge Trails. The trail system offers easy trails for beginners, as well as challenging trails with rocks and steep stairs. If you’re with children or older family members, take the Scenic Overlook Trail for an easy, hour-long hike. Experienced hikers may prefer to go on the Whirlpool Rapids Adventure Trail instead. You’ll be climbing over rocks in certain parts of this trail, so be sure to wear comfortable and sturdy shoes. Don’t forget to bring water to stay hydrated since it will take you about three hours to complete this hike.
Boating and Water Adventures
If the thought of rowing a boat on calm waters appeals to you, consider renting a boat at the Buffalo Maritime Center. Rowing allows you to enjoy some peace and quiet, and it gives you the opportunity to meditate or relax while you glide on the water in a leisurely fashion. You can rent a typical rowboat for $20 an hour, but if you add $5 more, you can rent a flamingo paddle boat which can seat a family of three.
Want to go kayaking instead? Rent a single, tandem, or paddle board kayak from BFLO Harbor Kayak. You can go on an hour-long or half day kayak excursion to learn about the Buffalo Waterfront’s history. If you find this interesting, think about booking a Silo City Kayak Tour which can take anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours. You can also go on the water to see how the light changes while on the sunset or sunrise kayak tour. Kayaks can be rented everyday of the week as early as 9am, and you can paddle away until 8pm.
Western New York is a paradise for outdoor activity enthusiasts. Whether you’re looking for laidback activities or thrilling experiences, consider these outdoor adventures to engage with nature, which can benefit your health, wellbeing, and happiness.
