(WNY News Now) – A stolen vehicle traffic stop in Olean early on July 4 led to the arrest of two men and the seizure of drugs, stolen property, and burglary tools.

OLEAN, N.Y. – The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office reports that two Olean residents were arrested early Friday morning following a traffic stop involving a stolen vehicle and subsequent narcotics investigation.

At approximately 4:02 a.m. on July 4, deputies stopped a vehicle on Washington Street in the City of Olean. The driver, identified as 40-year-old Anthony M. Margeson, was operating a vehicle reported stolen from the City of Jamestown. Eric R. Smith, 35, also of Olean, was a passenger in the vehicle and is alleged to be the individual who initially stole it.

Deputies observed drug paraphernalia in plain view, prompting a search with K9 Lex, who alerted to the presence of narcotics. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately 25.9 grams of suspected methamphetamine, suspected Oxycodone pills, packaging materials, a digital scale, lock-picking tools, and several items of stolen property, including a Samsung smartphone and four debit cards.

Both men were taken to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office Olean Substation for processing before being arraigned in the City of Olean Court.

Margeson faces multiple felony charges, including:

  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 2nd and 3rd Degrees
  • Three counts of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 4th Degree
  • Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia in the 2nd Degree (Packaging Material and Scales)
  • Possession of Burglar’s Tools
  • Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the 3rd Degree

Smith was charged with three counts of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 4th Degree.

Both men were remanded to the Cattaraugus County Jail and are scheduled to appear in court at a later date. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
