(WNY News Now) – A local grassroots mission goes mobile to serve more neighbors in need.

North Tonawanda, N.Y. — A new era of community giving rolls into action with the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Pantry 383’s Mobile Food Pantry on Monday, July 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its standing location at 383 Oliver Street. Founded by North Tonawanda resident Al Baker, Pantry 383 began in November 2023 as a stationary dry pantry and fridge. Now, thanks to local support and their continued dedication to serving others, the pantry is hitting the road.

Pantry 383 has been transformed from a 1992 Rockwood camper into a fully functional mobile food pantry that travels throughout the North Tonawanda area to meet people where they are. Its regular hours remain Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the ability to move to different neighborhoods as needed.

“We started Pantry 383 because we saw a need in our community and wanted to do something about it,” said founder Al Baker. “We never imagined it would grow this fast. The support we’ve received has been incredible, and now with the mobile pantry, we can reach even more people.”

In partnership with the Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas, the grand opening celebration will double as a community food drive, and attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations to help stock the mobile unit. Those who wish to donate at another time can reach out to Al Baker directly to make arrangements.

“Our neighbors have stepped up time and time again. This is about giving back to the community that’s given us so much,” Baker added. “We believe no one should go hungry, and if we can help even one person, it’s worth it.”

For updates or to arrange a donation, follow Pantry 383 on Facebook or contact Al Baker directly.
