(WNY News Now) – MAYVILLE, N.Y. – A Portville woman faces multiple charges after allegedly fleeing the scene of an accident while driving intoxicated with a child in the vehicle, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded on August 8, 2025, at approximately 3:12 p.m. to a traffic accident with injuries at the intersection of Route 394 and Route 430 in Mayville. Upon arrival, officers were informed that one of the vehicles involved had left the scene.
A short time later, deputies located the vehicle at a residence and identified the driver as Penny A. Payne, 66, of Portville, N.Y. An investigation determined that Payne was operating her vehicle while intoxicated.
She was taken into custody and charged with Felony DWI under Leandra’s Law, endangering the welfare of a child, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, and failure to yield the right of way.
Authorities said Payne was released with appearance tickets and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Chautauqua Court at a later date. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
