(WNY News Now) – FRANKLINVILLE, N.Y. — Senator George Borrello has addressed community concerns regarding environmental impacts to Ischua Creek, following reports linking the issue to wastewater discharges from Great Lakes Cheese.
“The environmental impacts to Ischua Creek are understandably concerning, particularly given the creek’s importance as a natural resource in our region. Initial findings by the state Department of Environmental Conservation indicate that the discharge operations at Great Lakes Cheese appear to be the source. It is important to underscore that testing by state and county health officials has found that public drinking water supplies remain unaffected.
However, out of an abundance of caution, targeted sampling of nearby private wells and rigorous monitoring by state and local officials will continue. Recreational use of the creek downstream of Franklinville should continue to be avoided until further notice.
I appreciate the cooperation of Great Lakes Cheese throughout this process. The company has voluntarily paused operations of its discharge outfall to implement mitigation measures and conduct a thorough analysis of its wastewater systems. These immediate steps are important for protecting the long-term health of the creek and restoring this vital ecosystem.
Great Lakes Cheese is a family and employee-owned company and has been a good neighbor in this region for decades. I am confident in their commitment to resolving this issue fully and responsibly. Our office remains in close contact with the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Health and appreciate their ongoing communication with our office and local officials. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and ensure the Franklinville community remains informed as remediation continues.”
