Deputies say a 42-year-old was stopped while operating a golf cart on a public roadway and found to be intoxicated.

(WNY News Now) – ELLERY, N.Y. — A Chautauqua County man faces felony driving while intoxicated charges after deputies stopped a golf cart on a public roadway in the Town of Ellery on Saturday evening, September 13, 2025.

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were on routine patrol at about 8:26 p.m. when they observed a golf cart allegedly operating with insufficient tail lamps. The vehicle was also reportedly unregistered.

During the stop, deputies identified the operator as 42-year-old Patrick Kent of Ellery. Following an investigation, deputies determined Kent was intoxicated. He was taken into custody and transported to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office for processing.

Kent was charged with multiple offenses, including Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), DWI Per Se, DWI under Leandra’s Law, operating a vehicle with no or insufficient tail lamps, and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Leandra’s Law, enacted in New York State in 2009, imposes harsher penalties for those who drive while intoxicated with a passenger under the age of 16.

Following processing, Kent was released with appearance tickets and is scheduled to answer the charges in the Town of Ellery Court at a later date. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
