National Weather Service warns of dangerous wind chills reaching 25 below zero across multiple counties
(WNY News Now) – An Extreme Cold Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Buffalo office, warning residents across large portions of Western and Central New York of potentially life-threatening cold conditions later this week.
According to NWS Buffalo, the Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from late Friday night through Sunday morning, with the coldest and most dangerous wind chills expected late Friday night into Saturday.
Dangerously Cold Wind Chills Expected
Forecasters say wind chills could drop as low as 25 degrees below zero, creating hazardous outdoor conditions. At those temperatures, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 15 minutes.
The watch highlights an increased risk for anyone spending prolonged time outdoors, including those working outside, traveling, or without adequate shelter.
Counties Included in the Extreme Cold Watch
The Extreme Cold Watch covers the following counties:
- Erie
- Niagara
- Orleans
- Monroe
- Wayne
- Northern Cayuga
- Genesee
- Wyoming
- Livingston
- Ontario
- Chautauqua
- Cattaraugus
- Allegany
Residents in these areas are urged to closely monitor weather updates as conditions develop.
Safety Precautions Urged
The National Weather Service advises that this is a potentially dangerous situation to be outdoors. Those who must go outside are encouraged to take precautions, including covering all exposed skin with insulated clothing, wearing hats and gloves, and limiting time spent outdoors.
Officials also recommend checking on vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and individuals without adequate heating, as well as ensuring pets have proper shelter from the cold.

The Extreme Cold Watch was issued at 1:01 a.m. on February 5 by NWS Buffalo and remains in effect until 10:00 a.m. on February 8. Weather officials note that watches may be upgraded to warnings if confidence increases in the severity of conditions.
