(WNY News Now) – Governor Kathy Hochul on Monday welcomed a U.S. Supreme Court decision declining to hear a challenge to New York’s gun industry accountability law, allowing the measure to remain in effect.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul praised the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on June 15, 2026, not to review a legal challenge to the state’s gun industry accountability law.

The law, enacted in 2021, allows civil lawsuits against firearm manufacturers and sellers when their actions are alleged to have contributed to illegal gun use and gun violence. Supporters say the measure helps hold the firearms industry accountable, while opponents have argued it unfairly targets lawful manufacturers.

In a statement, Hochul called the court’s decision a “massive victory” in New York’s efforts to combat gun violence. She said the law provides New Yorkers with a pathway to seek legal action against gun manufacturers when firearms are used in deadly shootings.

The governor also emphasized that New York’s gun safety laws are among the strictest in the nation and stated that the state will continue pursuing measures aimed at reducing gun violence.

The Supreme Court’s decision leaves lower court rulings in place, allowing New York’s gun industry accountability law to remain in effect.

The Governor’s full statement can be viewed below:

“Today the Supreme Court declined to take up a challenge to New York’s landmark gun industry accountability law, a massive victory in our fight against gun violence.

“The gun lobby fought tooth and nail against this first-in-the-nation law, which gives New Yorkers the ability to sue gun manufacturers when their weapons are used in deadly shootings. Our gun safety laws are some of the toughest in the nation and have proven successful in protecting New Yorkers from the scourge of gun violence.

“New York will not allow gun manufacturers to profit from tragedy. If you refuse to take necessary steps to prevent your guns from being used illegally, we will make sure you pay.”
