(WNY News Now) – A federal grand jury has indicted a 20-year-old Buffalo man accused of participating in a conspiracy involving stolen USPS keys, mail theft and fraudulent bank deposits.

U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced that Jaquan Greene, 20, of Buffalo, has been indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit mail theft, bank fraud and aggravated identity theft.

According to the indictment, the alleged conspiracy took place between Feb. 18 and April 23, 2026. Prosecutors allege Greene and others obtained keys used by the U.S. Postal Service to open mail collection boxes.

Investigators say the group used the keys to access collection boxes and steal mail, including checks. The indictment alleges the checks were deposited into bank accounts controlled by members of the group, who then withdrew or transferred the money.

Prosecutors allege Greene possessed checks stolen from a collection box on Cayuga Road in Cheektowaga. Those checks were reportedly deposited into a Citizens Bank account controlled by members of the alleged conspiracy.

According to the indictment, Greene and two other people drove to the Cayuga Road collection box on April 23 with a stolen USPS key. Authorities allege they opened the box and removed a collection basket containing letters, packages and other mail.

Law enforcement officers arrived as the group was leaving, according to prosecutors. Greene and the others allegedly fled by vehicle and then continued on foot before being taken into custody.

Greene made an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer and was detained.

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Boston Division, under the direction of Acting Inspector-in-Charge Justin Page. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sasha Mascarenhas and Paul E. Bonanno are prosecuting the case.

If convicted of the charges described by federal prosecutors, Greene could face significant federal prison penalties, including a maximum of 30 years for the conspiracy charge.

An indictment is an accusation. Greene is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
