ALBANY – New legislation introduced in New York state would ban the use of facial recognition software by landlords in residential buildings.
The bill comes after officials in San Francisco voted to prohibit police and other city agencies from using facial recognition systems.
The lawmakers behind the New York legislation cited tenant complaints about landlords who proposed installing facial recognition systems in their buildings.
Assemblywoman Latrice Walker, a Brooklyn Democrat, says facial recognition systems are intrusive and their use by landlords could lead to illegal surveillance of tenants.
The bill has not been scheduled for a vote.
