(WNY News Now) – Washington D.C. – The House of Representatives voted in favor of H.R. 192, a bill aimed at barring noncitizens from participating in elections within the District of Columbia, reigniting a contentious national dialogue on electoral integrity and immigrant rights.

In a decisive vote of 262-143, H.R. 192, proposed to halt noncitizen participation in D.C. elections, was approved today. The legislation, co-sponsored by Congresswoman Tenney, seeks to overturn a 2022 D.C. law that permitted noncitizens meeting residency criteria to vote in local elections, a measure enacted on February 23, 2023.

Congresswoman Tenney, a vocal advocate for the bill, underscored its significance, stating, “Illegal aliens who have broken our laws to enter our country should not be able to influence our policies or choose our elected officials. Voting is one of the most sacred rights we have as Americans, and we must protect it at all costs.” Tenney pledged to continue safeguarding American elections, emphasizing the necessity of restricting voting privileges to U.S. citizens.

The passage of H.R. 192 has ignited a broader discourse on the intersection of immigration and electoral rights, with proponents applauding measures to uphold the sanctity of American citizenship and detractors decrying what they perceive as disenfranchisement and discrimination against noncitizen residents.
