In a shocking twist, a Syracuse shooting initially reported as an injury case has turned into a homicide investigation revealing a fatal stabbing.
On the night of June 23, 2024, at approximately 10:40 p.m., Syracuse Police Officers responded to a distress call at the intersection of E. Fayette St. and Westmoreland Ave. An unmoving individual was reported lying in the street. Officers arrived to find 23-year-old Jahliek Stewart suffering from a severe bleeding wound to his torso. Immediate medical assistance was rendered, and Stewart was rushed to Upstate Hospital. Tragically, despite the hospital staff’s valiant efforts, Stewart succumbed to his injuries the following day, June 24, 2024.
From the moment the call came in, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) and the Homicide Unit launched an exhaustive investigation. This included interviewing numerous individuals, conducting an extensive canvass of the neighborhood and the city, executing several search warrants, and thoroughly analyzing the recovered evidence. Through these diligent efforts, it was determined that Stewart had been stabbed.
The investigation reached a significant breakthrough with the identification of a suspect, Ashley Roche, born June 23, 2002. On June 25, 2024, Roche turned herself in at the Syracuse Police Department’s Homicide Unit located in the Public Safety Building. She was subsequently detained at the Onondaga County Justice Center, where she awaits arraignment.
Ashley Roche now faces charges under the following statutes:
- Penal Law 125.15: Manslaughter 2nd
- Penal Law 265.01: Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th
